6-Year-Old Girl Overcomes Brain Tumor at Holtz Children’s Hospital

In May 2024, 6-year-old Imani Dell, a lively first grader from North Miami, began experiencing unusual symptoms that would lead to a life-changing medical journey. What started with crossed eyes and double vision soon revealed a much more serious condition: a fast-growing brain tumor.

A Sudden Health Crisis

Imani’s mother, Johnesha Brown, initially attributed her daughter’s eye issues to excessive screen time. However, when Imani reported seeing double, Johnesha knew something was wrong. Despite insurance challenges, Johnesha insisted on immediate medical attention. At the University of Miami Health System’s emergency room, a CT scan revealed a golf-ball-sized tumor in Imani’s brain.

Expert Care at Holtz Children’s Hospital

Imani was transferred to Holtz Children’s Hospital, where Dr. Heather McCrea, director of pediatric neurosurgery, led a successful surgery to remove the tumor. The mass was identified as a medulloblastoma, a rare and aggressive brain tumor common in children. Post-surgery analysis confirmed it as a Group 4 medulloblastoma with intermediate risk.

Rigorous Treatment and Recovery

Following surgery, Imani underwent 30 rounds of radiation therapy, which caused fatigue, hair loss, and other side effects. Despite these challenges, she remained resilient. After a brief break, Imani began nine cycles of chemotherapy over the next year, which were less taxing but still demanding.

A Triumphant Return to Normalcy

By August 2025, Imani completed her treatment and celebrated with a visit to Epic Universe theme park. She returned to school in September, eager to reunite with friends and resume her second-grade studies. Regular scans have shown no signs of recurrence, and Imani is regaining her energy and enthusiasm.

A Grateful Family

Johnesha Brown expressed profound gratitude for the care Imani received. “Everything just is perfect,” she said, noting that Imani is returning to her joyful, playful self. Imani’s journey has not only been a testament to her strength but also to the exceptional care provided by Holtz Children’s Hospital.
