Danielle Spencer, Beloved ‘What’s Happening!!’ Star and Veterinarian, Dies at 60

Danielle Spencer, best known for her role as Dee Thomas on the 1970s sitcom What’s Happening!!, passed away on August 11, 2025, at the age of 60.

Spencer’s portrayal of Dee—a sharp-witted, quick-tongued little sister—made her a fan favorite. She returned to the role in the 1980s spin-off What’s Happening Now!!, further cementing her place in television history.

Her life took a tragic turn in 1977 when she was involved in a severe car accident that left her in a three-week coma and claimed the life of her stepfather. Despite dealing with long-term spinal injuries and paralysis in later years, Spencer displayed remarkable resilience.

In the early 1990s, she shifted careers, earning a doctorate in veterinary medicine from Tuskegee University and dedicating her life to caring for animals. She became a passionate advocate for animal rights and was honored with a permanent exhibit at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture, making her the first former child actor to receive such recognition.

Her health struggles continued, including a breast cancer diagnosis in 2014 that led to a double mastectomy, and emergency brain surgery in 2018. Despite these challenges, she remained an inspiration to many.

Friends, family, and former co-stars paid tribute to Spencer, remembering her as a loving sister, a fierce advocate, and a source of unwavering positivity. She is survived by her mother, Cheryl, and her brother, jazz musician Jeremy Pelt.
