Bangkok, September 5, 2025 – Thailand’s parliament has officially chosen Anutin Charnvirakul as the country’s new Prime Minister, ushering in a new chapter of leadership amid political uncertainty and a turbulent power shift.
Parliamentary Victory
Anutin, leader of the Bhumjaithai Party, secured a decisive victory with 311 votes, well above the 247 needed to claim the premiership. His rival, Chaikasem Nitisiri of the Pheu Thai Party, gained only 152 votes, while several lawmakers abstained.
The win marks a dramatic realignment in Thai politics, following the ousting of Paetongtarn Shinawatra by the Constitutional Court just weeks earlier.
A Shift in Alliances
Anutin’s ascent was made possible through a deal with the People’s Party, which pledged support in exchange for commitments to hold general elections within four months and pursue constitutional reforms. While the People’s Party will not formally join his government, its backing proved crucial to securing a parliamentary majority.
Blow to the Shinawatra Dynasty
The Shinawatra family, long a dominant force in Thai politics, has suffered a major setback. Paetongtarn Shinawatra was removed from office over ethics violations, and her father, former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, left the country ahead of a critical court ruling that could result in imprisonment. These developments have weakened the once-powerful dynasty and opened the door for new leadership.
From Cannabis Campaigner to Prime Minister
At 58, Anutin is a seasoned politician and businessman. He first gained prominence as health minister during the COVID-19 pandemic, where he played a central role in reopening Thailand’s borders and stabilizing public health systems. He is also widely known for championing the legalization of cannabis, which has transformed Thailand’s medical and agricultural sectors.
Once part of the political movement founded by Thaksin Shinawatra, Anutin has now emerged as a figure positioned against the dynasty that launched his career.
Looking Ahead
In his first remarks after the vote, Anutin acknowledged the challenges ahead and emphasized urgency. “There is not much time,” he said, vowing to address Thailand’s pressing political and economic issues without delay.
While his promises of reform and swift elections have been welcomed by many, political analysts caution that his government may face difficulties navigating coalition politics and balancing the expectations of both conservative and progressive forces.
