Apple Declares 11-Inch MacBook Air and Two MacBook Pros Obsolete

September 1, 2025

Apple has officially classified the 11-inch MacBook Air as obsolete, marking the end of repair support for one of its most portable and beloved laptops. Alongside the Air, two MacBook Pro models from 2017 have also been moved to the obsolete list.

What Obsolete Status Means

When Apple labels a device as obsolete, it means the product has been discontinued for more than seven years and is no longer eligible for hardware repairs through Apple Stores or authorized providers. In some cases, battery service may remain available depending on parts supply, but general repair support is no longer offered.

Models Affected

The three devices now listed as obsolete are:

  • 11-inch MacBook Air (2015)
  • 13-inch MacBook Pro (2017, four Thunderbolt 3 ports)
  • 15-inch MacBook Pro (2017)

These machines belong to Apple’s Intel-powered era, preceding the company’s transition to its own Apple Silicon chips.

The End of an Era

The 11-inch MacBook Air, introduced in 2015, became popular for its slim design and portability, making it a favorite among students and frequent travelers. Apple discontinued the model in 2016, but it remained a staple in the memory of users who valued its compact form.

What Users Should Expect

Owners of these devices will still be able to use them, but they may notice:

  • Reduced compatibility with future software updates
  • Limited access to modern apps and features
  • Lack of official repair options, aside from potential battery replacements

Looking Ahead

Apple’s decision highlights its continuing shift toward modern, M-series powered laptops. Current MacBook Air and Pro models deliver dramatically faster performance, longer battery life, and updated designs that make them the natural successors to the discontinued Intel-based lineup.
