BMW and Mercedes-Benz are ramping up their presence in the electric vehicle (EV) market with the launch of two new luxury electric SUVs aimed at competing directly with Tesla’s Model Y.
BMW iX3: Advanced Technology and Range
The BMW iX3 represents a major leap in the company’s EV lineup. Built on BMW’s new “Neue Klasse” platform, the iX3 offers an estimated range of up to 497 miles, surpassing the Tesla Model Y. It features an 800-volt electrical architecture capable of ultra-fast charging, adding roughly 230 miles of range in just ten minutes. The all-wheel-drive system delivers 463 horsepower, while the cabin integrates cutting-edge digital features, including a panoramic infotainment display and seamless connectivity for both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Production is set to begin in Hungary, with availability in key international markets expected by mid-2026.
Mercedes-Benz Electric GLC: Luxury Meets Performance
Mercedes-Benz has introduced a fully electric version of its popular GLC crossover. The Electric GLC will come in two variants: a high-performance dual-motor all-wheel-drive version delivering 483 horsepower, and a rear-drive model with 369 horsepower. Both are powered by a 94-kWh battery and an 800-volt system that enables rapid charging and an estimated range of around 376 miles. The interior is highlighted by a massive, integrated display, underscoring the luxury credentials of the vehicle. The GLC models are expected to reach showrooms between late 2026 and early 2027.
Taking on Tesla
Tesla’s Model Y continues to dominate the global EV market, but BMW and Mercedes are betting that extended range, faster charging, and high-end digital features will appeal to consumers seeking a luxury EV experience. The iX3 and Electric GLC are positioned to attract buyers who prioritize long-range performance, advanced technology, and premium interiors.
