Drone Attacks Target Gaza Aid Flotilla: Activists Report Explosions and Interference

September 24, 2025

A humanitarian mission aimed at breaking Israel’s naval blockade of Gaza has been disrupted by multiple drone attacks, activists aboard the flotilla reported early Wednesday. The Global Sumud Flotilla, a coalition of over 50 civilian vessels carrying aid and activists from 44 countries, was targeted while navigating international waters off the coast of Greece.

Drone Strikes and Disruptions

According to organizers, at least 15 drones launched simultaneous attacks on several boats in the flotilla. Activists reported hearing explosions and witnessing drones dropping unidentified objects, including stun grenades and flares. Communication systems were reportedly jammed, and some vessels experienced interference with their radio equipment.

Brazilian activist Tiago Ávila confirmed the incidents via social media, noting that at least four boats were affected. One explosion was reportedly recorded from the Spectre boat. Earlier, the flotilla claimed drone attacks in Tunisia, but Tunisia’s interior ministry disputed these reports. The flotilla, which departed from Barcelona in late August, remains off the Greek island of Crete. Israel has declared its intention to prevent the flotilla from reaching Gaza, having already blocked similar efforts in June and July.

International Response and Support

In response to the attacks, Italy has deployed its navy frigate Fasan to assist the flotilla, particularly to ensure the safety of Italian nationals aboard. The European Union condemned the use of force and emphasized the importance of respecting freedom of navigation. Prominent activist Greta Thunberg, aboard one of the ships, described the attacks as intimidation tactics, while another activist reported physical and communication disruptions from drone interference.

Background and Objectives

The Global Sumud Flotilla aims to challenge the 18-year-long Israeli blockade of Gaza by delivering symbolic humanitarian aid. The mission includes activists and lawyers, notably Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg and Italian MEP Benedetta Scuderi. Israel has criticized the flotilla for alleged ties to Hamas, a claim organizers deny. Israel has offered to transfer the aid through its ports but insists on enforcing the naval blockade.

Ongoing Determination

Despite the setbacks, flotilla participants remain determined to proceed with their mission. The attacks have not deterred their commitment to challenging the blockade and delivering aid to Gaza. As the situation unfolds, the international community continues to monitor the developments closely.
