Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence startup, xAI, has filed a lawsuit against tech giants Apple and OpenAI, accusing them of suppressing competition in the AI industry. The legal action was filed in a U.S. federal court in Texas and alleges that Apple and OpenAI have effectively locked up markets to maintain their monopolies, making it difficult for innovators like xAI to compete.
Allegations of Anti-Competitive Practices
The lawsuit claims that Apple’s integration of OpenAI’s ChatGPT into its iOS operating system has sidelined competing AI applications, including xAI’s AI assistant, Grok. By embedding ChatGPT into iPhones, iPads, and Macs, xAI argues that Apple has limited users’ access to alternative AI tools, stifling innovation and reducing consumer choice.
xAI further contends that its Grok app has been deprioritized in the App Store despite strong user ratings. The lawsuit seeks substantial damages and requests that the court block what xAI describes as an anti-competitive scheme.
Musk’s Previous Legal Challenges
This is not Elon Musk’s first legal action involving OpenAI. In 2024, Musk filed a separate complaint alleging that OpenAI had deviated from its mission of developing AI for the public good after transitioning from a nonprofit to a for-profit model. Musk, who co-founded OpenAI in 2015, left the organization in 2018 and later founded xAI to compete in the growing AI sector.
