Microsoft is set to end support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025, leaving millions of users facing the prospect of using an unsupported operating system. However, Microsoft is offering options to extend support for free, allowing users to maintain their systems securely.
Extended Security Updates (ESU) Program
Microsoft’s Extended Security Updates (ESU) program provides critical security updates for Windows 10 devices beyond the official end-of-support date. For the first time, this program is available to individual consumers, not just businesses.
Consumers can access this program through the following methods:
- Syncing Settings to OneDrive: By linking your PC to a Microsoft account and syncing your settings to OneDrive, you can receive one year of free security updates. This option does not require a full data backup, but a Microsoft account is necessary.
- Microsoft Rewards: Users can redeem 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points to cover the cost of the ESU, effectively extending support for one year at no additional charge.
- Paid Option: For those who prefer not to use the above methods, a direct payment of $30 provides one year of extended security updates. This option is available to individual consumers and does not require a Microsoft account.
To enroll, navigate to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and look for the “Enroll now” link. The rollout is gradual, so if the option isn’t immediately visible, it should appear before support ends in October.
Important Considerations
- Hardware Compatibility: Ensure your device is running Windows 10 version 22H2 to be eligible for the ESU program. Devices not meeting this requirement may not receive updates.
- No New Features: The ESU program only includes security updates. New features, non-security updates, and general support are not part of this service.
- Availability: The free ESU options are available to individual consumers. Businesses and organizations have separate licensing options, which may involve additional costs.
Alternatives
If you choose not to participate in the ESU program, consider the following alternatives:
- Upgrade to Windows 11: If your hardware meets the minimum system requirements, upgrading to Windows 11 ensures continued support and access to new features.
- Switch to Linux: For older hardware or users seeking a free, open-source operating system, Linux distributions like Ubuntu or WINUX offer a familiar interface and extended support.
- Community Support: Engage with online communities and forums for advice on maintaining Windows 10 securely after the end-of-support date.
By taking proactive steps, you can continue using Windows 10 safely beyond October 2025. Choose the option that best fits your needs and ensures your system remains protected.
