A newly tracked asteroid, about the size of a commercial jet, will pass close to Earth on September 3, offering scientists and stargazers a rare opportunity to observe it up close. Despite its proximity, experts confirm there is no danger of impact.
The space rock, named 2025 QD8, measures between 55 and 124 feet across and will travel at more than 28,000 miles per hour. At its closest approach, it will come within roughly 135,000 miles of Earth—just over half the distance to the Moon.
Astronomers already captured early images of the asteroid as it sped toward our planet, appearing as a faint moving dot among the stars. Its flyby will serve as another reminder of the importance of tracking near-Earth objects while giving researchers valuable data to refine orbital models.
While invisible to the naked eye, the event highlights how advances in observation technology are allowing humanity to watch cosmic visitors in real time, deepening our understanding of the dynamic environment beyond Earth’s atmosphere.
