A fast-moving wildfire in Central California has forced evacuations, threatened hundreds of homes, and left three people injured, according to local officials battling the blaze.
The fire, which erupted near the town of Mariposa in Mariposa County, rapidly consumed thousands of acres amid dry conditions and strong winds. As of Monday evening, the blaze had scorched more than 12,000 acres and was only 15% contained, prompting an all-hands response from state and federal firefighting agencies.
Residents in the wildfire’s path were ordered to evacuate immediately, with many leaving behind homes and belongings as flames approached their properties. Emergency shelters have been set up in the area to accommodate displaced families, while firefighters continue to work around the clock to protect structures and control the fire’s spread.
Three individuals sustained injuries during the incident, including one person who suffered severe burns. All were transported to nearby hospitals, and their conditions are currently unknown. Authorities have not yet disclosed the circumstances surrounding the injuries.
“This fire is moving fast and is very dangerous,” a Cal Fire spokesperson said during a press briefing. “Our crews are doing everything they can to get it under control, but the terrain and weather are making this a difficult operation.”
Helicopters and air tankers have been deployed to drop water and fire retardant on the flames, while ground crews create containment lines in the rugged, hilly terrain. The fire’s rapid growth has been fueled by gusty winds and parched vegetation, typical of late summer conditions in the region.
Governor Gavin Newsom’s office has been monitoring the situation closely. While a state of emergency had not yet been declared as of Monday, officials indicated that could change if conditions worsen.
Local officials are urging residents to stay alert and heed all evacuation orders. Fire danger remains high across much of California, where several other fires are also burning amid extreme heat and dry weather.
Authorities have not confirmed the cause of the fire, and an investigation is underway.
