The Pokémon community has new reasons to get excited. In a recent Nintendo Direct, several major updates were revealed for Pokémon Legends: Z-A, including new Mega Evolutions for the Kalos starter Pokémon and a full post-launch expansion pack.
New Mega Evolutions for Kalos Starters
The fan-favorite starters Chesnaught, Delphox, and Greninja—originally from Pokémon X & Y—have finally received their Mega Evolutions in Legends: Z-A. These three will be available during competitive Ranked Battles through the Z-A Battle Club, by earning their respective Mega Stones (Chesnaughtite, Delphoxite, and Greninjite) as rewards:
- Mega Chesnaught arrives later, in higher-rank Seasons, adding impressive durability and new mechanics to its kit.
- Mega Delphox is revealed as Fire-Psychic, elegant yet powerful, featuring flame and branch-like magical effects and enhanced psychic powers.
- Mega Greninja gets a Water-Dark upgrade, with increased reflexes and tricks that toy with expectation—some of its movements are inverted or acrobatic in unexpected ways, making it a stronger contender in battle.
These Mega Stones won’t be available via the regular story progression—they’re tied to the online competitive play environment, which gives Ranked mode more weight and incentive.
Mega Dimension DLC: Expanding the Adventure
Alongside these new starter Mega Evolutions, Nintendo confirmed a paid expansion pack titled Mega Dimension. This DLC builds on the luminosity of Lumiose City and adds post-game story content that continues after the main campaign.
Key details of Mega Dimension:
- Two new Mega Evolutions for Raichu: Mega Raichu X and Mega Raichu Y. These add fresh electric-type strategies and visuals, including new features focused on electricity manipulation, speed, and unique animations or traits tied to each form.
- The Mythical Pokémon Hoopa appears as a major storyline element. Known for its dimensional portals and space-bending abilities, Hoopa’s involvement hints at distortions or rifts in space across the region—likely tied to the “Mega Dimension” name.
- Spatial anomalies (or “distortions”) will be part of the exploration factor—expect parts of the map, especially in Lumiose City, to behave differently, opening paths or encounters that weren’t there before.
Release & Competitive Implications
When it launches, Pokémon Legends: Z-A will include the new Mega forms for Chesnaught, Delphox, and Greninja as part of its launch lineup. The Mega Dimension DLC will be purchasable separately, adding both the Raichu Mega forms and the Hoopa storyline. Players who engage in Ranked Battles have special opportunities to earn the new Mega Stones through different seasons.
For competitive scenes, these additions could shift team builds. Having new Mega Evolutions for Greninja, Delphox, and Chesnaught gives players more options in team roles—attacker, support, tank—especially since some of the designs emphasize speed, evasiveness, and mixed offensive/defensive utility. Raichu’s two Mega variants may also alter how electric-type strategies are constructed, particularly in meta matchups that focus on speed or electric moves.
Why This Matters
- Many fans have long awaited Mega Evolutions for Chesnaught, Delphox, and Greninja—this fills a gap in the Kalos starter line that was previously unaddressed.
- Introducing the DLC early adds to the launch buzz for Legends: Z-A, and signals that the game will continue to grow after release, not just with cosmetic or minor content, but with substantial narrative and gameplay expansions.
- Hoopa’s inclusion and the idea of dimensional distortions imply more than just new fights—it suggests new ways of exploring and interacting with the game world.
