Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced a major reshuffle of his cabinet following the dramatic resignation of Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner, who stepped down amid controversy over unpaid taxes. The move has reshaped the government’s top posts and sparked debate over the direction of Labour’s leadership.
Lammy Moves, Cooper Rises
Former Foreign Secretary David Lammy has been reassigned as both Deputy Prime Minister and Justice Secretary. The influential but demanding role is seen by many as a step sideways, if not downward, from his high-profile position as the nation’s top diplomat.
Replacing him as Foreign Secretary is Yvette Cooper, who leaves her post at the Home Office. Cooper’s appointment makes her the UK’s chief representative abroad at a crucial time for international relations.
The Home Secretary role has been filled by Shabana Mahmood, who previously held the justice portfolio. She will now oversee domestic security, immigration, and policing policy.
Wider Cabinet Changes
The reshuffle reached across government:
- Steve Reed becomes Housing Secretary, filling the role vacated by Rayner.
- Pat McFadden takes charge of a newly expanded Work and Pensions Department, with added responsibilities for housing and skills.
- Liz Kendall has been appointed Science and Technology Secretary.
- Peter Kyle assumes the role of Business and Trade Secretary.
- Emma Reynolds is the new Environment Secretary.
- Douglas Alexander returns to frontline politics as Scotland Secretary, replacing Ian Murray.
Meanwhile, Lucy Powell, the former Leader of the House of Commons, has been removed from government. Rachel Reeves remains Chancellor, providing continuity in economic leadership.
Political Impact
The reshuffle marks the first time in British history that the three “Great Offices of State” — Chancellor, Home Secretary, and Foreign Secretary — are all held by women. While Starmer has framed the changes as a step toward stronger governance, critics argue the moves reflect instability inside Labour’s top ranks.
Angela Rayner’s departure removes a key voice from Labour’s left wing, raising concerns about the party’s unity and its ability to maintain support among grassroots members. At the same time, opposition parties have accused the government of being distracted by internal crises while public services and economic challenges mount.
Looking Ahead
With polls showing growing support for rival parties, particularly Reform UK, Starmer will now need to prove that his reshuffled team can deliver stability, restore confidence, and keep Labour’s political momentum on track.
