At the CEDIA 2025 convention in Denver, Technics unveiled two new direct-drive turntables: the SL-40CBT and SL-50C. These models aim to bring the brand’s legendary engineering to a broader audience, offering high-quality audio performance at a more accessible price point.
SL-40CBT: Wireless Convenience Meets Audiophile Quality
The SL-40CBT is designed for modern listeners who value both style and functionality. It features a direct-drive system with an iron-coreless motor, ensuring stable rotation and minimal vibration. The turntable comes equipped with a high-precision S-shaped aluminum tonearm and a factory-installed Audio-Technica AT-VM95C cartridge, known for its clarity and warmth.
One of the standout features of the SL-40CBT is its Bluetooth connectivity. This allows users to stream audio wirelessly to compatible speakers and headphones, providing flexibility in placement and playback. Additionally, the turntable includes a built-in moving magnet (MM) phono stage, eliminating the need for an external preamp.
Aesthetically, the SL-40CBT departs from Technics’ traditional die-cast aluminum chassis, opting instead for a sleek MDF wood construction. It is available in three finishes: Terracotta, Light Grey, and Charcoal Black, allowing it to blend seamlessly into various home decors.
SL-50C: Classic Performance with a Modern Touch
The SL-50C shares many of the same features as the SL-40CBT but is tailored for audiophiles who prefer a traditional wired setup. It also boasts the iron-coreless direct-drive motor and S-shaped aluminum tonearm. However, instead of Bluetooth, the SL-50C focuses on delivering pure analog sound through its high-quality components.
This model comes with a factory-installed Ortofon 2M Red cartridge, renowned for its detailed and dynamic sound reproduction. The SL-50C supports 33 1/3 and 45 RPM speeds, catering to a wide range of vinyl records.
Like the SL-40CBT, the SL-50C features an MDF wood construction and is available in the same three finishes. Its classic design and emphasis on analog purity make it an excellent choice for purists seeking high-fidelity sound.
Pricing and Availability
Both the SL-40CBT and SL-50C are priced at $899 and are set to be available in September 2025. They can be ordered through Technics’ official website or authorized retailers. These models represent a strategic move by Technics to offer high-quality turntables at a more accessible price point, catering to both newcomers and seasoned audiophiles.
