August 11, 2025 — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has unveiled plans for a swift and decisive takeover of Gaza City, describing the move as essential to eliminating Hamas and ensuring long-term security control over the territory. The proposal calls for evacuating civilians to designated safe zones before Israeli forces move in to secure the city and establish a new civilian administration under Israeli oversight.
Netanyahu’s plan would exclude both Hamas and the Palestinian Authority from any governing role, with Israel maintaining what he described as “overriding security responsibility.” The shift marks a significant escalation in the nearly two-year-old conflict and reflects his determination to reshape Gaza’s political structure.
The announcement has sparked strong opposition within Israel’s own military leadership. Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir has warned that such an operation could endanger remaining hostages held by Hamas and place additional strain on Israeli forces already stretched by the prolonged conflict. Public protests have also intensified, with demonstrators demanding a ceasefire and renewed negotiations for the hostages’ release.
Internationally, the plan is facing growing resistance. Germany has recently suspended military exports to Israel that could be used in Gaza, citing humanitarian concerns. Aid agencies and human rights groups have voiced alarm over the potential impact on civilians, especially in light of worsening conditions on the ground.
Gaza’s humanitarian crisis continues to deepen, with reports indicating over 200 deaths from malnutrition, including at least 100 children. The situation was further inflamed by the recent killing of six journalists — two of them Al Jazeera reporters — in an Israeli strike near al-Shifa Hospital, which Israel claimed targeted a Hamas operative.
As Netanyahu pushes forward, questions remain about whether this strategy will bring an end to the conflict or prolong the suffering for both Palestinians and Israelis caught in the crossfire.
