Matt Damon and Ben Affleck are teaming up once again, this time in Netflix’s upcoming thriller The Rip. The film, directed by Joe Carnahan, promises a tense and gritty look at trust, betrayal, and survival in the heart of Miami’s criminal underworld.
A Dark Discovery in Miami
The story follows two seasoned detectives and their squad after they stumble upon millions of dollars hidden inside a decrepit stash house. What begins as a routine raid quickly spirals into suspicion, fractured loyalties, and paranoia. As word of the money spreads, outside forces and internal rivalries put every relationship to the test.
Damon and Affleck at the Core
Damon stars as Lieutenant Dane Dumars, while Affleck takes on the role of Detective Sergeant J.D. Byrne. Their long-standing creative partnership is once again central, bringing depth and realism to the tense dynamic between their characters. Both actors also serve as executive producers through their company, Artists Equity.
A Stellar Ensemble
The film features an impressive cast, including Steven Yeun, Teyana Taylor, Sasha Calle, Kyle Chandler, Catalina Sandino Moreno, and Scott Adkins. Together, they build a layered story that blends high-stakes action with moral complexity.
Inspired by Real Stories
Director Joe Carnahan drew inspiration from real accounts shared by a friend in Miami’s narcotics division. He describes the film as a spiritual successor to classic ’70s and ’90s cop dramas like Serpico and Heat, emphasizing raw intensity and psychological depth.
Coming Soon
The Rip is slated to premiere on Netflix on January 16, 2026. With its star-studded cast, morally complex narrative, and Damon–Affleck synergy, it’s shaping up to be one of the most anticipated thrillers of the new year.
