Trump and Putin Hold Alaska Summit on Ukraine: Talks Continue Without Agreement

In a high-profile meeting in Anchorage, Alaska, U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin held extensive discussions regarding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The summit, lasting nearly three hours, concluded without a formal ceasefire or any immediate agreement, though both leaders described the talks as “productive.”

This was President Putin’s first visit to the United States in a decade. The meeting opened with ceremonial honors and a joint military flyover, followed by closed-door negotiations. Observers noted a cordial tone between the two leaders, though their public statements reflected the persistent complexity of the Ukraine crisis.

President Trump suggested that Ukraine might need to engage directly with Russia to explore a resolution, emphasizing the potential for a comprehensive peace agreement rather than a temporary ceasefire. President Putin reiterated Russia’s stance on addressing what he described as the “root causes” of the conflict, including Ukraine’s NATO aspirations and internal political factors.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who did not attend the summit, expressed disappointment over the absence of tangible outcomes. He emphasized that Ukraine must be directly involved in any resolution, with its sovereignty and territorial integrity fully respected. Zelenskyy also indicated openness to future trilateral discussions involving both Trump and Putin.

European leaders reacted cautiously, stressing the need to maintain support for Ukraine while ensuring that any peace agreement includes robust security guarantees. They underscored that sanctions against Russia should remain in place until a verifiable and lasting resolution is achieved.

Although no immediate breakthrough emerged from the Alaska summit, the meeting has set the stage for continued diplomatic efforts. President Trump indicated plans to meet with President Zelenskyy in Washington in the coming weeks to further explore pathways toward ending the conflict.

The summit underscores the ongoing challenges in resolving the Ukraine war and highlights the delicate balance of diplomacy between major world powers in a high-stakes geopolitical landscape.
