Washington, August 8, 2025 – Armenia and Azerbaijan have signed a landmark peace agreement in Washington, officially ending decades of hostilities rooted in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. The deal, mediated by the United States, was hailed as a turning point for the South Caucasus and a step toward long-term stability in the region.
Key Terms of the Agreement
The accord includes the creation of a new transport corridor linking Azerbaijan to its Nakhchivan exclave through southern Armenia. The route, to be developed and managed by an American-led consortium under Armenian law, is expected to boost trade and improve regional connectivity.
Alongside infrastructure development, the agreement outlines expanded cooperation in energy, technology, defense, and commerce between Armenia, Azerbaijan, and the United States. Restrictions on U.S. military cooperation with Azerbaijan have been lifted, marking a significant policy shift.
Political and Constitutional Changes
As part of the deal, Armenia has pledged to amend its constitution to remove provisions implying territorial claims over Azerbaijan. The OSCE Minsk Group, which had mediated the conflict for years, will be dissolved, reflecting a shift toward direct, U.S.-led diplomacy.
